Gay & Lesbian Community to Celebrate Dayton Bicentennial at Annual Dinner

The Tenth Annual Miami Valley Lesbian and Gay Pride Dinner is scheduled for the evening of June 15 at the Dayton Convention Center. A Business Expo kicks off the evening at 5:30pm and dinner will follow at 7:15 pm.

The theme for this annual event is "Celebrating and Affirming Our Community. The evening is open to all who are supportive of the Dayton gay and lesbian community, and is one of the official Bicentennial events for the city of Dayton.

Featured entertainment is "Proud Voices: A Celebration of Our Gay and Lesbian Culture", written and performed by the Human Race Theatre Company, CITYFOLK, and other local arts, cultural, and community organizations. Material culled from recordings will incorporate performers, musicians, and artists from the Miami Valley celebrating the diverse and ever-changing culture of the gay and lesbian community.

Also featured on June 15 is Talvin Wilks, an AfricanAmerican Dayton-born playwright and director from the Group Seattle's Multi-Cultural Theatre. Mr. Wilks, who is committed to the exploration of the dynamics of the AfricanAmerican and gay experience, will explore homophobia and racism in the African-American and gay communities by interweaving scenes from his plays with his personal journey.

Tickets for this event are $28 per person, and are available by mail order (PRIDE '96, P.O. BOX 4134, DAYTON OH 45401), or at Q! Giftshop, Epic Book Shop, Earthsong Herbal, Books & Company, or The Samuel Johnson Coffee Shop.

PROUD VOICES

A Celebration of Our Gay & Lesbian Culture

Entertainment for the Dayton Pride Dinner will be PROUD VOICES: A Celebration of Our Gay & Lesbian Culture, an original script presented by The Human Race Theatre Company. Adapting stories collected from the Miami Valley lesbian, gay, and bisexual community, PROUD VOICES celebrates the diverse and ever-changing culture of the gay community.

"The focus of the production is about who we are today, as a community and as individuals," says director Brian Crowe. Dealing with issues of family and friends, the working environment, pride and bigotry, and parenting: the production joins powerful stories from the lesbian, gay, and bisexual community with popular and original music. "This is something new for the Pride Dinner," continues Crowe. "In the past, headliner comedians and vocalists have been. brought in from across the country to perform. PROUD VOICES is for, by, and about members of the Miami Valley community. "It just seems right that as we celebrate the Bicentennial of Dayton, we focus on the individuals and organizations that have made the Miami Valley such a wonderful place to be. There is a lot of talent, pride, and some great stories here."

PROUD VOICES is an extension of the Dayton Stories Project, a partnership of The Human Race, CITYFOLK, the Montgomery County Historical Society, and other local cultural and community organizations.
